Reprise
4800 words | pg-ish | Peggy Carter, Nick Fury (Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Pepper Potts)
Nick showed up at nine and Peggy knew it was bad news because he showed up without dessert. (Sometimes the secrets kept between spymasters was that one of them had a sweet tooth and it wasn't her.) She still made tea because, despite more than sixty years in America, the British approach to trouble was still her default.

"We've found Captain Rogers."

Landsmen (also at: ao3 | tumblr)
1800 words | PG-13-ish | Peggy Carter, Howard Stark, (Abraham Erskine)
"What did he say?" Peggy asks. English is the official language of the Rebirth lab, but Yiddish is the unofficial one, the language of frustration and jubilation and anger and affection. The project is documented in English, but it is lived in Yiddish and Peggy, like everyone else not already fluent in the language, has picked up words here and there. Mostly terms of endearment, addressed to both her and the test tubes of successful experiments, and the many (many) ways to call someone an idiot.

Inherited Characteristics [ DW | ao3 ]
2800 words | Tony Stark, Peggy Carter (Rhodey, Howard Stark)

It's 1986, the Sox are going to the World Series, and sixteen-year-old Tony Stark has just gotten himself arrested for trying to sell nukes to the bad guys.
"Are you my court-appointed nanny here to encourage me to tell the nice FBI men everything I know?" Tony asked brightly.

The woman — older lady, closer to Dad’s age than to Mom’s, not super-rich but definitely not a civil servant — arched an eyebrow. “Don’t you watch too much television,” she said in an English accent as she closed the door behind her and crossed the room, taking the seat on the other side of the table.

"My name is Peggy Carter," she said as she sat down, leaving her fancy hat on but taking off her gloves. "I’m a friend of your father’s."

It was Tony’s turn to cock an eyebrow. “You’re a little old for one of Dad’s friends.”

A story and its prequel, AU to both Captain America: the First Avenger and Agent Carter:

Premise: after the rescue of the 107th, Steve Rogers cashes in all of his favors and makes what deals he can to get Bucky a medical discharge from the Army, sending him home to Brooklyn and far from enemies and curious scientists both. But Steve's war goes on until it ends badly, in an exploding plane over the Black Sea. Captain America is presumed dead, his shield recovered and returned to a grieving America while his body remains undiscovered.

Shielded
1500 words | Steve Rogers

1944: Steve at war, sans Bucky.

Preserved
72K words | Peggy Carter, Bucky Barnes

1952: a new danger is threatening to unbalance the already-roiling Cold War: a Soviet assassin let loose from behind the Iron Curtain. Peggy Carter isn't sure she wants to believe that the assassin is a super-soldier because of what it could mean, but she does know that whoever it is, she'll have to break her promise to keep Bucky Barnes far from danger.

[tumblr.com profile] septembriseur has been alluding to this fic for months, and if you've enjoyed her amazing, chilling looks at the early days of SHIELD before, you're going to go weak-kneed over this latest. It's an intensely researched, long-view look at Howard Stark, and what kind of brilliant young man gets involved in the Manhattan Project and sucked into the Cold War as a way of running from Captain America and the war years. It's also a hard look at his other original sin, the supposed betrayal of Anton Vanko that drives Iron Man 2.

The characterizations are subtle and complex and messily, so vulnerably human. The Easter egg moments will absolutely give you a shock when you almost glide over them. This is absolutely a Peggy who builds an organization that thrives and yet has to be torn down; this is a Peggy who lives a life too, which I found myself so grateful for as I read. Howard Stark makes so much sense when you look at him laid out like this, and even if your heart will be a bit broken, this fic will pay you back for it tenfold. Read this fic; we've been waiting for it.

Howard Stark: his history told. As if it were that simple.
He's startled by the hand that settles on his shoulder: a heavy comfort, warm and gentle. Erskine's face suggests he's laughing at Howard a little bit, but it's not unsympathetic, that expression. "Fear not," Erskine says. "Your, how do you say? Fuck-ups. Are very much minor, so far. At any rate, this is what the work is for, yes? We break things, and then we put them back together."

Erskine doesn't, really. He works with living bodies. You can't do that with living bodies; you can't just put them back together again. But Howard appreciates the words, anyways.

"Okay," he says. "Okay, yes. Back to work."

Regret to inform [DW | AO3 | tumblr ]
1500 words | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, etc.
Steve didn't have blood family, but he did have people he'd had to tell that he was leaving Brooklyn and at the top of the list, ahead of his boss at the shop and landlady, had been the Barneses. They were as close as he came to blood kin; he had been an honorary fifth Barnes child for most of his life just as Bucky had been welcome in his mother's home. And if Mrs. Barnes had been just a little more insistent on Steve's attendance at a Sunday supper after Bucky had been packed off to the Army, Steve hadn't really minded for more reasons than just the opportunity for a roast dinner. There'd been tearful hugs and promises to write -- more than Bucky did -- when he'd left, officially to go down to DC to draw things for the war effort (maps or propaganda posters, he'd left it a little vague). He still got dutiful letters from the younger Barnes siblings, along with the occasional packet of treats and offers to purchase whatever items he couldn't find where he was because they knew how hard it was for Bucky to keep in socks and toothpaste, even if Steve was only in DC.

Summary:

There's no bench, so Bucky leans against the railing of the handicap ramp while he reads over his papers again. They're clinical: "You have been certified 1-A by the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps. To complete your enlistment in the Jaeger Academy, report to Recruiting Station 482 on 17 April 2016. You will be assigned further instructions after completion of the final assessment." There's more, bunches of numbers and letters meant to explain his test results, probably, but they don't mean a damn thing to him.

So when I say these are drabbles, what I really mean is these are intense and complicated looks at Peggy Carter and Howard Stark and Alexander Pierce and Steve and Bucky, which are only "drabbles" inasmuch as they appeared as responses to Tumblr prompts first. Cannot recommend enough.

"My father helped defeat Nazis. He worked on the Manhattan Project." A look at Howard Stark and the atomic bomb, and technology, and his war, and light in the Arctic. Really gorgeous, unnerving prose, an unsettling ending; great character piece.
Howard thought there was something familiar about this. He listened to the jangling of medals. The generals shifted, nervous with sweat— July in New Mexico— dust rattling on the dirt floors— and bent forwards, blinking. "Did it work? Did it work?" Like kids at a magic show. He flashed back to Rogers' body, produced from its machine like a coin from behind the ear.

summary: Steve navigates the sometimes choppy seas of being a celebrity in the twenty-first century and finds the time to fulfill a twentieth century promise and return to school.

"Cooper Union has asked if you’d be willing to accept an honorary degree from them in May. It’d be a speech and the usual gladhanding, but they also want to pull together a retrospective of some of your work — it’s why they’re asking so early."

"Honestly? I’d be more interested if they were offering to let me finish my actual degree instead," he said as he stood up. He’d meant it as a joke when he’d spoken the words, but he realized that maybe that hadn’t come across and, in hindsight, whether that had been intentional.

To admit my own bias, this story is one I beta'd. But even if I hadn't, this is an utterly delightful fic set before the first Captain America movie. For those who know the canon it's crossed with, the Archie narration is perfect, and for those who don't, it's a fun outside POV fic with a really great period feel to the narration and style.

As much as I've enjoyed the deluge of post-movie angstfests, sometimes you just want fluff and [archiveofourown.org profile] Omnicat's Pay It Forward series really hit that spot for me. There are two fics in the series so far, Riviera Life and Fly on the Wings of Love, both of which are sweet and funny and still entirely in character. (The second one has lots of Tony, for extra bonus fun.)

Heroes, Soldiers, Fathers by [archiveofourown.org profile] zelos is a missing scene for The First Avenger that I was recently linked to when I asked my flist for recs for those. This fic is about Steve's relationship with Col. Phillips (a character who has hardly any fic at all!) and also about Steve adjusting to his new situation and Bucky dealing post-torture.

Steve knows that when Bucky says do you remember these days, what he really means is that really happened, didn’t it, it’s a real memory?

The Elephant Kids by [archiveofourown.org profile] Pyrosane
I just love the atmosphere and the emotional resonance in this one.
The first time Steve ever stole a car, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Bucky had pitched the thought and whatever Bucky pitched was what happened next, because Bucky may have been an idiot but he also knew what it meant to be alive.

Count the Cost by [archiveofourown.org profile] katydidmischief
Homeless Bucky on the run seems to be a thing now. What I like about this is how the search for Bucky and the need to give him space coexist.
He tries to strangle Steve every time the man appears over the intervening weeks: he trashes two televisions and half a dozen radios, his reaction escalating to Rogers' own image or voice.

I also want to remind folks that we've got an open call for links to icons that has already yielded some pretty excellent finds. \o/
